The papers of Jon L. Herring document his career at the USDA from 1962 until his retirement in 1979. They consist of correspondence concerning his research in Hemiptera-Heteroptera, especially aquatic Heteroptera such as Halobates. Also included are research proposals that Herring reviewed for the National Science Foundation.

Historical Note
Jon L. Herring (1922-1985) was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended the University of Florida at Gainesville, where he received his B.A. and M.A. After earning a Ph.D. in 1958 from the University of California, Berkeley, Herring was hired by the Government of American Samoa at Pago Pago as Staff Entomologist in charge of all entomological affairs.
In 1961, Herring returned from the South Pacific to take a job with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Beltsville, Maryland, working on the biological control of insects. By 1962, he had moved to the Natural History Building in Washington, D.C., to become the Heteropterist for the Insect Identification and Parasite Introduction Research Branch, USDA. After 1972, the Branch became the Systematic Entomology Laboratory.
