George C. Steyskal (1909-1996) was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the Henry Ford Trade School in Dearborn. After graduating in 1928, he worked at various tool and machine parts factories until 1962, all the while pursuing his interests as an amateur entomologist. In July 1962, Steyskal accepted a position as a Research Agriculturalist for the Insect Identification and Beneficial Insect Introduction Institute, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), located in the Smithsonian's Natural History Building. After 1972, the Institute became the Systematic Entomology Laboratory, USDA.
