Descriptive Entry
The papers of Charles Butts document his career with the USGS and the VGS and his research on Appalachian geology and paleontology. They include a large file of incoming and outgoing correspondence with academic, government, and economic geologists and paleontologists. The letters concern his geological surveys of the Appalachian region, the preparation of publications and maps, and professional activities. Also included are notes, manuscripts, maps, lists, and related materials concerning his research.

Historical Note
Charles Butts (1863-1946) was a paleontologist and authority on the Paleozoic formations of the Appalachian region. He received the B.S. in 1899, and the M.S. in 1900 from Alfred University. Butts joined the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1901 as Assistant Geologist, and was promoted to Paleontologist in 1909 and Geologist in 1912. He remained with the USGS until his retirement from federal service in 1933. From 1933 until his death, Butts was employed by the Virginia Geological Survey (VGS) to conduct mapping of the Paleozoic formations of the Appalachian valley. During his career with the USGS, Butts conducted extensive geological surveys in Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia.
