These papers consist mostly of incoming and outgoing correspondence documenting Brown's career with the USGS, his work at the USNM, and his paleobotanical research. The correspondence concerns the acquisition, loan, and identification of fossil plant specimens; the publication and review of scientific papers; and professional activities. Also included are notes and lists from his research; photographs of Brown, the paleobotanist David White, and collecting localities; and three incoming letters of the paleontologist William Morris Fontaine from Edward Drinker Cope, Samuel H. Scudder, and Charles Leo Lesquereux dated between 1876 and 1878.
