These papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, photographs, and related materials documenting Rosewater's curatorial career at the USNM; malacological research; collecting expeditions, especially a trip to Eniwetok Atoll, 1963, the Te Vega Expedition to Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, 1963, and the Pele Expedition to Indonesia, 1970; and professional activities.

Historical Note
Joseph Rosewater (1928-1985), a malacologist, was educated at the University of New Hampshire (B.S., 1950; M.S., 1955) and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1960). In 1960, he joined the Division of Mollusks, United States National Museum (USNM), and served as Associate Curator, 1960-1965, Curator-in-Charge, 1965-1968, and Curator, 1968-1985. Rosewater's research specialty was the systematics and evolutionary biology of the mollusk family Littorinidae. He participated on several major collecting expeditions, mostly to the Indo-Pacific region. Rosewater served as President of the American Malacological Union in 1969.
