Descriptive Entry

This collection contains information on administrative activities, curation of collections, publication of scientific manuscripts, cooperative research agreements with universities, budgets, staffing, committees, and grants. Incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, research proposals, newsletters, and annual reports also document the activities of SEL. In addition, these records contain correspondence, memoranda, grant proposals, progress reports, publications, and related materials pertaining to foreign research projects of SEL funded by excess foreign currency. Of special interest in these records is information concerning the reorganization of the Agricultural Research Service and the Insect Identification and Parasite Introduction Research Branch, biographical data on various SEL entomologists, and photographs and slides of entomologists and scientific illustrators at work.

Historical Note

For an administrative history of the Systematic Entomology Laboratory (SEL), see Record Unit 7309. These records document the administration and research of the United States Department of Agriculture's Systematic Entomology Laboratory under Chiefs Ronald William Hodges (1976-1980), Paul Malcolm Marsh (1980-1985), and Douglass R. Miller (1985- ) . In 1985, the title chief was changed to research leader.
