For a brief history of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU), see Record Unit 7150, American Ornithologists' Union Collection, 1883-1977.
These records supplement Record Unit 7150, both in extending coverage in early records and providing records from the mid-1970s. Particularly noteworthy are early records of presidents - especially Joel Asaph Allen, Jocelyn Van Tyne, and Ernst Mayr - as well as presidents' and secretaries' papers since the mid-1970s. Much information about early committee work is found in Allen's and Van Tyne's papers. Photographs are of individuals and groups at scientific meetings and strongly supplement the earlier collection. Editorial files cover chiefly Ornithological Monographs, with small amounts pertaining to the Checklist of North American Birds and The Auk.
