These records document the establishment, administration, and research program of the Chesapeake Research Consortium, Inc. They include records concerning the incorporation of CRC in 1972; budget and fiscal records; correspondence of Directors Roy, Chamberlain, and Cronin; correspondence, reports, and other records of the CRC's Research Advisory and Interagency Advisory Committees; correspondence, proposals, and reports submitted by CRC to funding agencies including the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; records concerning workshops and seminars sponsored by CRC; CRC annual reports; and correspondence, memoranda, reports, and publications documenting research programs on wetlands preservation, waste water management, the effects of hurricanes, and other topics relating to the Chesapeake Bay.

The Chesapeake Research Consortium, Inc. (CRC) was established in 1972 when the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institution (through the Chesapeake Bay Center for Environmental Studies) joined to identify and conduct research on the principal environmental, marine, atmospheric, terrestrial, societal, and technological problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its contiguous regions. The CRC conducts scientific research and programs in information transfer, technology applications, and education and training. Initial funding for CRC was provided by the National Science Foundation. Directors of CRC included Robert H. Roy, 1972-1973; Theodore Chamberlain, 1973-1977; and L. Eugene Cronin, 1977- .
