Content Description

Content Description
The Joyce F. Riegelhaupt papers consist of correspondence, research materials, published and unpublished writings, photographs, biographical files, engravings of Portugese scenes, maps, and political posters. The bulk of the collection documents Riegelhaupt's 1961-1962 doctoral fieldwork and consists of field notes, correspondence, and photographs. Riegelhaupt's 1967 research in Brazil is also documented in field notes and photographs, and material from later trips to portugal is included to a lesser degree.
Correspondence is not extensive but includes Riegelhaupt's correspondence from her doctoral fieldwork, mostly with Sydel Silverman. Also in the collection are many of Riegelhaupt's published and unpublished articles, and several files loosley grouped as "biographical" containing Curriculum Vitae, obituaries, and college notebooks.
Most of the photographs in the collection are from fieldwork and related travels, but there are some that appear to be personal or vacation photos. Also contained in the collection are three maps of Sao Joao das Lampas and surrounding region, and six Portugese political posters collected by Riegelhaupt in the 1960s.
Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution or National Anthropological Archives, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.

Biographical / Historical

Biographical / Historical
Joyce Firstenberg Riegelhaupt (1936-1986; PhD Columbia, 1964) was the first American anthropologist to conduct comprehensive research on a peasant community in Portugal, emphasizing the role of national economic, political, and religious institutions in local life. She completed her doctoral research and dissertation In the Shadow of the City: Integration of a Portuguese Village under Conrad Arensberg. Riegelhaupt continued work in Portugal throughout her career, and in 1967 also began fieldwork in Brazil, where she collaborated with Shepard Forman on a study comparing the development of a "classical" European-style peasantry, and the market-oriented agrarian system stemming from slavery-based Brazilian society.
Riegelhaupt was faculty at Sarah Lawrence College from 1966 until her death in 1986.
