Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents
This manuscript consists of four stories in Meskwaki syllabary by Sam Peters and Joe Peters, with English translations by Horace Poweshiek. The texts are an untitled story by Sam Peters about the society of those who worship the little spotted buffalo; a text by Sam Peters whose title can be translated as "Another one," about Kochipehkwâha and the ghosts that blessed him; a text by Joe Peters and Sam Peters whose title can be translated as "This is one more story about the time when people had manitou powers, long ago;" and an untitled story by Joe Peters and Sam Peters about a man who loved a wife who preferred her Sioux captor. English translations are present for all of the stories except the first. On the back of the tablet, someone other than the Peters brothers wrote titles in Meskwaki syllabary for the last three stories: these can be translated "An old man was blessed by ghosts and made a sacred pack," "The boy who fasted in a stone house," and "The man who loved his wife."
