The collection consists of 25 drawings and one print created by Schumacher to illustrate his entries in the Bulletin of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, Vol. 3. A note in the Bulletin states that the articles: "are the outcome of explorations conducted under the joint auspices of the Smithsonian Institution and the Indian Bureau, for the purpose of making a representation of the archaeology of the California coast at the United States Centennial Exposition...the illustrations are from maps, sketches, and plans furnished by the author."
