Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a scrapbook created by Richard K. Cautley, an Englishman who travelled in the United States from 1860-1862. The scrapbook includes photographs, clippings, watercolor sketches, menus, and various types of souvenirs. The photographs include views made around English cities and towns including Chatham, Peterborough, York, Rochester (especially castles, abbeys, and cathedrals); St. Paul, Minnesota; and Cleveland, Ohio. There are also photographs of Dakota men and women and members of Cautley's family.

As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution or National Anthropological Archives, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.

Custodial History
The scrapbook was deposited in the Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) offices by a descendant of Richard K. Cautley in the 1930s. At some point, the scrapbook was given to the Smithsonian Archives and was retured to the BAE around 1950-1952.
