In 1883, Pierre Louis Jouy, an associate of the United States National Museum, accompanied the Honorable Lucius H. Fotte, the first Minister to the United States Legation in Seoul, to Korea to implement formal diplomatic relations between the United States and Korea. Jouy subsequently joined the Korean civil service.
