Photographs made by William M. Mann during a zoological expedition to Fiji and the British Solomon Islands. They document Indigenous people, villages, and the natural environment, as well as activities such as tapa making, building construction, and ceremonies.

Biographical/Historical note
William M. Mann (1886-1960) was an entomologist and zoologist who took part in several collecting expeditions and directed the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park for three decades. Born in Helena, Montana, Mann completed his BA at Stanford University in 1911 and earned his doctorate in entomology from Harvard University in 1915. After completing his studies at Harvard, he was selected as a Sheldon Traveling Fellow for a trip to Fiji and the Solomon Islands in 1915. Mann returned to the United States to serve as an entomologist for the United States Department of Agriculture (1916-1925). In 1925, he was appointed Superintendent of the National Zoological Park, a position he held until his retirement in 1956.
