Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
John W. Scally (1860-1930) was a licensed trader at Crow Agency and Pryor in Montana in the early 20th century. He learned the Crow language at Fort Custer, circa 1880, before beginning employment at E. S. Richardson's trading post on the Crow reservation, circa 1890. Scally opened his own general store at Crow Agency in the 1920s and served as Commissioner of Big Horn County. Scally collected Native American artifacts from battlefields, most of which were later sold to the Rodman Wanamaker Expedition, circa 1908.
