This collection contains 78 black-and-white negatives and 35 photographic prints taken by Bernard J. Edley in 1948-1949. He was collecting on behalf of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. The images depict scenes of everyday life among the Chan Santa Cruz Maya of Quintana Roo State and the Chamula Maya and Tzotzil Maya, in Chiapas State. Also present are views of archaeological sites at Monte Alban and Mitla in Oaxaca State.

Series 1 includes 22 negatives made by Bernard Edley during a 1948 expedition to Quintana Roo, Mexico, in Fall 1948. These images include everyday views and group portraits among the Chan Santa Cruz Maya. The photographs in Series 2 were also made in 1948 and include 16 negatives depicting scenic views at the Monte Alban site. Series 3 includes both photographic prints and negatives and include everyday views and group portraits among Chamula Maya and Tzotzil Maya community members in 1948-1949. Series 4 includes 24 prints and 24 negatives depicting scenic views at the Mitla site. Series 5 includes three prints made at Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, which are undated.
