George Wharton James (1858-1923) was born in 1858 in Lincolnshire, England. He was a Methodist minister and moved to the U.S. with his wife in 1881. He was defrocked after a scandalous divorce and became an author, writing more than 40 books about regional history in the Southwest and California and the culture of Native Americans.
