Content Description
The Northern Cheyenne photograph collection consists of 24 photographic images of members of the Northern Tsitsistas/Suhtai (Cheyenne) community near Lame Deer, Montana. These photographs were taken in 1900 by Ethel Merritt Dixon, and depict agency buildings, ration day, a trader's store, and groups and individuals going about their daily lives on the reservation.

Ethel Adams Merritt was born in Camden, New Jersey, in 1873. She married Herbert Sidney Dixon in 1902 in Brooklyn, New York. Although a resident of New York City for most of her life, in 1900 she traveled to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana, and photographed life there. More than fifty years later, in 1953, Ethel Merritt Dixon donated this photograph collection to the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, later to become the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
