She was author of many publications, including Fifty American Faces from the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery,1978; Adventurous Pursuits: Americans and the China Trade, 1784-1844, 1984; The First Federal Congress, 1789-1791, 1989; The Spirit of Party: Hamilton and Jefferson at Odds, 1992; 1846: Portrait of the Nation, 1996.
