Wilhelm Kress (1836--1913) was an inventor, writer, and lecturer. This collection contains one of Kress' German patents, patent number 8706, for one of his flying machine models; a letter from 1883, in German, signed by Kress; and a description, in English, of the flying machine written by Arnold Samuelson (who lists his title as "Chief Engineer").

Edward V. "Eddie" Rickenbacker (1890--1973) was a self-taught automotive engineer, an American fighter ace in World War I, and Medal of Honor recipient. He was also a race car driver, a government military consultant during World War II, and a pioneer in air transportation, particularly as the longtime head of Eastern Air Lines. This collection consists of a letter from Rickenbacker to James Quackenbush regarding future opportunities in the field of aviation.

Carol F. Jopling, a librarian and an anthropologist, conducted fieldwork among the Zapotec in Yalalag, Oaxaca, Mexico (1969-1971). She received a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts after completing a dissertation entitled Women Weavers of Yalalag: Their Art and Its Process (1973). She has long been interested in art, having taught courses in primitive and pre-Columbian art at Catholic University and American University in Washington D.C. She also edited an anthology of articles entitled Art and Aesthetics in Primitive Societies (E.P. Dutton, 1971). Mrs. Jopling is a former librarian for the Bureau of American Ethnology and the Smithsonian/Tropical Research Institute in Panama.

In 1924, the US Army Air Service sent four specially-built aircraft, the Douglas World Cruisers (DWC) Seattle, Chicago,Boston, and New Orleans on an around the world flight. Vance James Maloney, Sr. was serving as a missionary in Amoy, China in June 1924 when the world flyers made a refueling stop there. This collection consists of three photographs taken by Maloney during that refueling stop, as well as a copy of a 1924 letter written by Maloney to his parents in which he mentions the flight, along with a copy of a ten-page autobiography written by Maloney circa 1968 that includes several passages that relate to the flight.
