Theodore H. Reed was appointed Veterinarian at the NZP in 1955. Reed was only the second full-time staff Veterinarian hired by the Zoo - the first being Carter H. Anthony who served for a short time in the early 1940s. Most medical work performed on NZP animals was by veterinarians from other government agencies and local colleges and universities. Reed was appointed Director in 1958, and replaced as Veterinarian by James F. Wright. After Wright's resignation in 1962, Clinton W. Gray was appointed to the post. Veterinary medicine was recognized as an official administrative unit of the NZP in 1969, when the Animal Health Department was established. Its name was changed to the Division of Animal Health in 1971; the Office of Animal Health (OAH) in 1973; and the Department of Animal Health in 1980. Gray continued in charge of animal health until 1975. In that year R. Mitchell Bush was appointed Chief of OAH. During 1974-1975, veterinary medicine was combined with pathological work under the Office of Animal Health and Pathology.
