Safko International, Inc. Records
The records of Safko International, Inc., document an assistive computer technology company created by Lon S. Safko to produce and sell the environmental control systems he invented for the physically disabled, specifically quadriplegics. Through the use of a computer and alternative input devices, the physically disabled were able to overcome physical barriers which inhibited them from attaining an autonomous lifestyle.

Photographs taken by unknown photographers in Nigeria and found in an album signed on the front inside cover, "W.H. Himbury, Grosvenor Club, Piccadilly 10." Funeral pictures of important African chiefs are prominent within the album and include burial pictures of the family members of the deceased as well as of the belongings of the deceased. Images include views of Lagos and Abeokuta. African peoples include the Anang Ibibio, Kalabari and Efik. Images of individuals include British colonial officials and chiefs of the Niger Delta. Prominent among the British officials is Sir Claude Maxwell Macdonald (1852-1915), Governor of the Oil River Protectorate, which, after 1896, was known as the Niger River Protectorate.

The Smithsonian Institution Festival of American Folklife, held annually since 1967 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was renamed the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1998. The materials collected here document the planning, production, and execution of the annual Festival, produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (1999-present) and its predecessor offices (1967-1999). The W. Atlee Burpee & Company records, dated circa 1873-1986, document the firm's business activities developing plant varieties, working with contract seedsmen, and marketing and selling seeds. They include seed trial records, seed contracts, sales and acccounting records, inventories, office correspondence, seed catalogs, promotional and instructional materials, advertisements and advertising reports, contest letters, daybooks, photographs, reference materials, and other items relating to the company and some of its competitors.
