Admiral Albert C. Read, USN (Curtiss NC-4) Collection
bulk May 1919 to June 1919
Rear Admiral Albert C. Read (1887-1967) graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1907 and became Naval Aviator #24 in July 1915. In 1919, Read was the commander of the Curtiss NC-4, the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic. The NC-4 covered 2150 nautical miles, from Nova Scotia to the Azores. The NC-4 was joined in the flight by the Curtiss NC-1 and Curtiss NC-3, but both the NC-1 and NC-3 were forced to land in the open sea. This collection consists of the following: black scrapbook containing photographs with US Navy numbers; newspaper front pages; reports; cable grams; signals and dispatches; the NC-4 log; biography of Read; and correspondence.
Administrative Records
These records are the administrative subject files of John Whitelaw as Executive Officer, circa 1974-1978. Much of the material consists of copies of memos, budgets, and reports, mostly routine.
Arthur Raymond Brooks Collection
This collection consists of the personal papers and memorabilia of Arthur Raymond Brooks. It includes photographs, correspondence, documents, and certificates relating to Brooks' aviation career, as well as personal correspondence, photographs, and diaries (1907-87).
WASP Binder: Pictures of Life and Training of the Women's Air Force Service Pilots
This collection, compiled by Bernice Falk Haydu, a former WASP 44-7, contains original photographs, photocopies of photographs, class rosters, graduation data, copies of certification, a WASP songbook, an original Miss Fifinella color sketch by Walt Disney, and other related material. The photographs are all captioned with information from Mrs. Cliff Deaton, Chief Staff Executive Officer of the WASPs at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas. The material has been grouped in a binder under the following subheadings: Avenger Field; Life on Base; Wishing Well: Flight Training School; Physical Education and Marching; Graduations; VIPs; and a Miscellaneous file.
