This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from September 1959 to December 1960.
Original caption reads, "An ocici to take to farm. A simpler version of the more elaborate ceremonial form; the latter found widespread among the Igbo. In both cases a sauce, usually of palm oil and peppers, with perhaps other ingrediants, is placed in it and dipped into with yams or dried fish or another food. Probably made at Afikpo."
