This collection contains 147 photographic prints and 43 postcards from East Africa (circa 1907-circa 1914), especially Kijobe, which depict the activities of the Africa Inland Mission; Theodore Roosevelt's safari in 1909; views of Nairobi, Mombasa, Port Said, Lake Victoria and other landscapes; and portraits of Maasai, Kikuyu, Kamba, Kavirondo, Akawba, Gikuyu, Somali and Swahili coast peoples. Missionaries pictured include Hetz, Hurlburt, and Wallace, who is listed as photographer on many of the prints. The collection also contains 3 paperback books, published by Africa Inland Mission, which describe the history of the organization and the experiences of its missionaries: Faster Beats the Drum (1978), Another Hand on Mine (1975) and Gardens of Miracles (1976).

This collection consists of 126 chromolithographic trade cards (13 sets) published by the Leibig Company between 1899 and 1955. These trade cards were included with products sold in Europe, such as chicken soup and chocolate. The cards focus on African art and material culture and showcase distinctive ethnic types, artistic and craft traditions, cultural performance, dress/costume and leadership. Sets include In Transvaal, In Abyssinia, Scenes of Africa, In East Africa I, Madagascar, In East Africa II, Life Among the Congolese People, Wild Animals of the Congo, The Italian Empire, Congolese Craftsmanship, Hunting and Fishing in the Belgian Congo, Peoples of the Belgian Congo, and History of the Belgian Congo I-III. Captions on the cards appear in French, Italian and German.

The photographs document a variety of art works created by Africans. Objects depicted include boxes, bracelets, figures, gold weights, headrests, heads, masks, pendants, stools, and trumpets. Peoples and kingdoms represented include Anyi, Asante, Bamum, Bangwa, Baule, Benin, Chokwe, Fang (Pahouin), Fon, Ife, Lega, Luba, Mende, Nok, Pende and Yoruba. Princeton University staff assembled the collection to illustrate the publications entitled, African Folktales & Sculpture, ed. by Paul Radin (New York: Pantheon Books, 1952). Photographers represented include Ina Bundy, Eliot Elisofon, Walker Evans and Man Ray.
