Peter Hopkins papers

The Peter Hopkins papers measure 2.4 linear feet and date from 1823-2001, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1935-1994. Writings, letters and diaries make up most of the collection. Printed materials relate to exhibitions of Hopkins' artwork and theatrical performances of his wife, Gertrude Beach Hopkins. There also are writings by both Hopkins and his wife that appeared in the Christian Science Monitor. Of particular interest is a group of vintage family photographs and family papers dating from the 19th century, as well as diaries Hopkins kept while traveling and working in a mental hospital in inland China in the mid 1930s.

Jacques Joseph Camins films and posters
The Jacques Joseph Camins films and posters measure 0.5 linear feet and date to circa 1965. The collection is comprised of ten 16 mm motion picture films by Camins, including artists and scenes from Provincetown, Rockport, and Gloucester, Massachusetts, and other unidentified locations. Nine of the reels were compiled into a single reel to transfer to video, including eight color, silent reels containing footage of the Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock, N.Y., Arnold Blanch and his students, Anton Refregier, Marion Greenwood, Howard Mandel, Julio de Diego, N. Dirk, Hans Hofmann, Morris Davidson, George Yeter, Seong Moy, and Karl Knaths. The ninth reel transferred to video contains black and white, silent home movies with family and beach scenes. A tenth reel, not transferred, is an edited film of Provincetown artists with music and narration, with footage of artists Seong Moy, Karl Knaths, Lily Harmon, Anne Brigadier, Sabina Teichman, Umberto Romano, Yeffe Kimball, Bruce McKain, Philip Malcoat, and others. Although it is an edited work, the film lacks a formal title. Also included are two original posters by Seong Moy and Anne Brigadier done for a screening of Camins's film on Provincetown; a sound tape reel (7") of an interview with Henry Botkin, Umberto Romano, Joseph Kaplan, Irving Marantz, Sol Wilson, Anne Brigadier, and Sabina Teichman, and a sound tape reel (7") of an interview of Karl Knaths, both conducted by Camins and untranscribed.

The papers of New York City and Gloucester, Massachusetts painters Charles Allan Winter (1869-1942) and Alice Beach Winter (1877-1970) measure 6.7 linear feet and date from circa 1890-1949, and circa 1974. The papers include biographical material, news clippings, a scrapbook of illustrations by Charles Allan Winter published in Cosmopolitan magazine, original artwork, and photographic prints, acetate negatives, and 699 glass plate negatives of the Winters, their artist friends, family, and artwork.

Some of the represented artists include: Gertrude Abercrombie, Julius Bloch, Willem De Kooning, David Hare, Joseph Kaplan, Ibram Lassaw, and Joseph Stella. Folders consist of a large version photograph and both a duplicate small version and transparency of the photograph.

The papers of collage artist Adeline Herder measure 4.3 linear feet and date from 1942-1999. The collection presents an overview of Herder's personal life and career as a collage artist. Her personal life is reflected through biographical material, correspondence including letters between Adeline and her husband Milton Herder, and writings and notes including appointment books. The collection offers a rich resource on Herder's artistic activity with correspondence that includes documentation of her relationship with Marjorie Jacobson and the purchase of her work by Roy Neuberger and Joseph Hirshhorn. Herder's career is further represented through exhibition files, printed material, writings and notes, and video recordings.
