Word, Shout, Song: Lorenzo Dow Turner Connecting Communities through Language exhibition records
An exhibition documenting the historical journey made by people from Africa to the Americas, along with their language and music. In the 1930s, Lorenzo Dow Turner discovered that the Gullah people of Georgia and South Carolina retained parts of the culture and language of their West African enslaved ancestors. Turner's research produced a living treasury of previously unknown traditions, songs, and folkways that also uncovered and illuminated the connections with West African and Afro-Brazilian communities.

19th Century Pamphlet Collection
This collection, which dates from 1838-1898, contains nine pamphlets and one booklet. The materials cover various subjects relating to African-Americans, including civil rights, education, the Civil War draft and services for freedmen. Several of the pamphlets contain speeches by Frederick Douglass.

The photographs taken by Ludwig Winternitz depict various indigenous communities within the United States, including Seminole communities in Florida taken circa 1920, Chippewa communities in Michigan taken in August 1927, Payómkawichum (Luiseño) communities in California taken in 1930, and Odawa (Ottawa) communities in Michigan taken in 1926. P09759-P09764 were taken by an unknown photographer circa 1930.

The exhibition was organized by the Anacostia Museum and held there September 18, 1994 through November 06, 1994. Rivera uses his art to tell stories of his homeland and the Caribbean. Many of his works is this exhibit focused on the region's African heritage.
William Dandridge Terrell Papers
