Archives of American Art
Margarita Cano's papers measure 0.2 linear feet and date from 1983-1985. The collection primarily concerns the 1983 exhibition The Miami Generation, 9 Cuban-American Artists, an exhibition organized by The Cuban Museum of Art in Culture in cooperation with the Miami-Dade Public Library System and for which Cano served as Project Director. Curated by Guilio V. Blanc, the exhibition included work by Mario Bencomo, Maria Brito-Avellana, Humberto Calzada, Pablo Cano, Emilio Falero, Fernando Garcia, Juan Gonzalez, Carlos Macia, and Cesar Trasobares. The exhibition traveled to Meridian House International in Washington, DC and later to Philadelphia at the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies in 1985. Found are two files of correspondence, exhibition planning and publicity files, a catalog, checklist, and photocopied news clippings. Most of the documents are photocopies. There is also one folder of slides and photographs of works of art in the exhibition.

The papers of Cuban American painter Gustavo Acosta measure 1.0 linear feet and date from 1958 to 2017. Biographical material including artist statements and interviews are included, as well as documentation from Acosta's education and art production in Cuba. Correspondence is mostly professional in nature and spans from 1987 to 2012, in both Spanish and English. The professional files series includes exhibition documentation and proposals, as well as artwork inventories and a lecture including a digital slide presentation. Exiles in America: Cuban Pedro Pans and Balseros was an oral history project designed to research and document the journeys and experiences of two distinct immigration/migration experiences of the Cuban diaspora. Steve Valesquez of the National Museum of American History Division of Home and Community Life conducted twelve oral history interviews between 2014-2015. The project was funded by the Consortium for the American Experience. Correspondence written by the interviewees (as children) was transferred, processed, and digitized in 2020 through funds awarded by the Smithsonian Institution's Latino Initiatives Pool.
