Photographs taken by Phillips Stevens Jr. in Nigeria from 1964 through 1965. The photographic images are of Hausa and Yoruba architecture, art works in-situ including the bronzes at Tada and Jebba, and Masquerades among the Nupe peoples.
William Ian Brinkworth's collection, dated from 1901 to 1991, includes an extensive number of black and white photographs, negatives, color transparencies, books, audio tapes, manuscripts, and research materials. The manuscripts include Brinkworth's book drafts, film treatments, correspondence, historical documents, legal documents, journals and magazines in which his work was published.
Photographs taken by Victoria Scott from 1969 to 1979 in Nigeria to document Nigerian art, in particular works at the Oshogbo school, while teaching and working as a visual artist at the Jebba Technical College. Photographs are of artists and their works. Scott used the images in her courses on Nigerian art at the college. The photographs document drawings, graphic prints, paintings and textiles of the Oshogbo school of artists. There are photographic reproductions of the following works: Elephant by Nike; Elmina Castle by Kwe Ade Odus; Free Yourself and See Yourself by Twins Seven-Seven; Mamiwata VoyiboII by Bruce Onobrakpeya; Obatala and his Wife by Joseph Olu-Billy; Ogun, God of Iron by Sam Babarinsa; Reindeer by Jimoh Buraimoh; The Secret Life of the Twins of Nigeria by Asiru Olatunde; and Yam Festival Masquerade by Adebisi Fabunmui. Also included within the collection are images of artists at work and the town in which they live. People portrayed include artist Adebisi Fabunmi; a blacksmith at work in Kaduna, Nigeria; and potters in Gahana. Images of the towns include a market in Abeokuta, Nigeria; a Portuguese fort in Cape Coast, Ghana and an Osun (deity) shrine in Oshogbo.
Photographs taken by James Lee in Cameroon, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Zimbabwe between 1963 and 1970. The images reflect a variety of themes.
The photographs document William Fagg's extensive survey work in Nigeria and his trips to Benin, Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Zaire. The photographs illustrate African cultures and works of art, especially those of the Yoruba in Nigeria. Nigerian artisans portrayed include a blacksmith in the town of Jebba, a craftsman casting brass at Ijebu-Ode, and a potter at work in Nok. Celebrations and ceremonies documented include the igue oba and itue ceremonies and the festival of leaves in Benin. There are also images of dances of the Bargesh in northern Nigeria and a masked dance at Nok. Architecture documented includes altars and shrines in Benin and in Oyo, Nigeria; a Birom settlement; Brazilian-style houses in Porto Novo, Republic of Benin; an emir's house in Nigeria; a Jarawa village in Nigeria; the mosque in Keffi, Nigeria; and palaces of Yoruba kings. Most of the photographs show sculpture including Benin bronze plaques and hip masks; Esie stone sculpture; Ifa divination boards, drums, and figures; a Kuba ndop (royal statue) in the Kinshasa Museum; Nok terra-cotta and wooden figures; and Tada bronze figures. There also are images of epa (masquerade) masks; gelede (men's society) masks; a head of Olokun (a male Yoruba divinity) from Ibadan, Nigeria; and Yoruba edan ogboni (bronze staffs) and ibeji (twin figures) from Nigeria. Images of objects by identifiable artists include a palace pillar, post and sculpture by Agbonbiofe; a door and epa mask by Areogun; and a house post and lidded bowl by Olowe of Ise.
The collection includes 1,469 color slides (35mm) which were taken in Nigeria from circa 1964-1994, and focus on ancestral altars; artists; art objects in museums, including bronze plaques and carved ivory tusks; ceremonies and festivals, including the Igue and Ewere Festivals, and the Emobo, Otue, Olokun, title-taking, and Blackmun's initation ceremonies; and people, including Oba Erediauwa and chiefs Eribo, Ero, Esogban, Ezomo, Ohanmu and Osaigeide; and street and landscape scenes in Benin City, Ife, Lagos, Ishiago, and Mbarri, Owerri, Owo, among other locations in Nigeria.
The collection consists of 6,567 color slides taken by Dr. Marilyn Houlberg during various field studies among the Yoruba in southwest Nigeria between 1961 and circa 2005. The images depict Yoruba art and culture with a special focus on artisans, art objects, body arts, costume, festivals, hairstyles, indigenous photography, weaving and textiles. Cultural events depicted include Balufon festivals, Egungun and Gelede masquerades, social events (weddings, christenings, funerals), and religious ceremonies (initiation and animal sacrifice). Also included are various scenes of daily life, architecture, food preparation, markets, portraits and landscapes. Houlberg extensively documented Yoruba artists in the process of creating their art, including carvers Yesufu Ejigboye, Runshewe, and Lamidi Fakeye, as well as the final pieces themselves. Houlberg documentated art in situ, such as Yoruba house posts, shrines, wall art and wood doors and art objects, including Gelede masks, Ibeji (twin) and Eshu figures, Osanyin staffs, and Ogboni and Shango shrines. Manuscript and printed materials, including Houlberg's resume, thesis, and numerous published articles are also available in this collection.
Slides taken in Nigeria, 1965-67, a few years after independence and at the eve of the Biafra War by Edwin R. and Emily Dean. Emily Dean took most of the photographs. She taught at the St. Louis Secondary School. The images are typical for the time period (note that some of them are half frame images, taken with a type of camera heavily promoted in the 1960s). Geographic locations reflect the Deans' experiences and travel: the University of Ibadan Campus, the Jos Museum, Bida , Zaria, Kano, Lagos, and Abeokuta. Of particular interest is a series of Adire production in Abeokuta, the old palace at Idanre and the Timi of Ede's Shango shrine.
This collection is comprised of photographic and manuscript materials, primarily created by Eliot Elisofon to document his travels and work. The images portray many aspects of African life and culture including agriculture, wildlife, archaeology, architecture, art and artisans, children, cityscapes and landscapes, leaders, markets, medicine, recreation, ritual and celebration, and transportation. The manuscript materials include correspondence, essays, clippings, puobligations, notes, research, and itineraries.

Subjects include agriculture; animals; artists; body arts; cityscapes; cultural landscapes; dance; education; expeditions; flora; industry; leaders; marketplaces; medicine; military; missionaries; music; portraits; recreation; rites and ceremonies; and transportation, among many other topics.
