Propaganda moved to the air during the Second World War. Leaflets bearing Japanese characters, like the one in this collection, were airdropped by US pilots in enemy-controlled territories of the Southwest Pacific with the intention to reduce the morale of their soldiers.

Before the atomic bombing missions of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, leaflets bearing illustrations and Japanese characters were dropped from the air by the US Army Air Corps to warn the Japanese populace. This collection consists of three bombing leaflets as well as a snapshot of Seymour Sylvan with his crew in front of his Boeing B-29 Superfortress.

Shortly before the crew of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay completed their mission to bomb Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, U.S. pilots dropped leaflets over Japan warning citizens to evacuate the cities.
