Photographs and cabinet cards from Senegal collected by the staff of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, during the 1980s. Popular from the mid-1860s through the 1900s, cabinet cards were commercially produced 4" x 5 1/2" photoprints mounted on card stock measuring 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", often with an embossed studio name in the corner. Frequently sold as collectors' items, these cards often contained images of attractive women or royalty of various nationalities. Images include cabinet cards from the Bonnevide Photographic Studio and from J. Barbier.

The majority of the photographs were taken in Cape Coast. Some the images were taken in Elmina. Several images depict chiefs, including a chief of Elmina, in their regalia and with their entourages. Other images depict Fante peoples in studio settings. Their attire and coiffures are of great relevance for art historical study. Also included in the album are images of the architecture of Cape Coast and Elmina.

A bound notebook of prints picturing a model of the royal palace at Babanki Tungo, West Cameroon. The accompanying caption on the inside of the first image reads, "The model represented in this photographic album is the royal palace at Babanki Tungo, West Cameroon. It was carved by Robert Toh, the royal craver, during 1954-55. The brass figurines were sculpted by Umaru Njasi, a brass-caster from Bamum. The photographs are by Evan G. Schneider and were taken in Southeastern Ohio. Mr. Schneider is also responsible for the printing. Gilbert D. Schneider Athens, Ohio - - 1968." The palace and figurines were also donated in 1979 to the Museum of African Art, now the National Museum of African Art (accession no. 79-1-1).
