The collection consists of approximately 25,000 images (negatives and prints) taken by the late Dr. Timothy Garrard (1943-2007). Some images were taken in Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso between 1980-1990, but the majority were taken in Cote d'Ivoire from 1983-2002. Subjects depicted include natural and cultural landscapes, the Senufo Poro society, and the Akan, Baule and Senufo peoples.
Photographs taken and postcards gathered by Philip M. Abrams during his travels through Liberia, Mali, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Burkina Faso, 1970-1973. Activities documented in the images include a Bundu sande women's society performance with Sowei (female guardian spirit) masks in Liberia; a Dogon dama (festival) masquerade staged for tourists in Sangha, Mali; a Grebo war dance in Krutown, Monrovia, Liberia; young Vai boys during initiation into the poro male secret society; and masked Vai dancers performing on Providence Island, Monrovia.
The collection primarily includes photographs of Limba peoples taken by anthropologist Simon Ottenberg during field research in northern Sierra Leone within Bafodea Town, the capital of Wara Wara Bafodea Chiefdom, and Guinea, from October 1978 through July 1980. The collection also includes photographs taken while conducting field research at an Afikpo village-group, in southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988 and in 1992.
The papers of American sculptor Stephen Antonakos measure 24.2 linear feet and 1.73 GB and date from 1932-2014, with the bulk of the material dating from 1960-2014. The collection documents Antonakos's pioneering work in neon, through biographical material, correspondence, writings and notes, project files, exhibition files, printed and digital material, and photographs.
The Scurlock photographic studio was a fixture in the Shaw area of Washington, D.C. from 1911 to 1994, and encompassed two generations of photographers, Addison N. Scurlock (1883-1964) and his sons George H. (1920- 2005) and Robert S. (1916-1994). Subseries 4.12 materials primarily document clients of the Scurlock Studio that were organizations and the images depict those groups' and organizations' activities. The majority of materials are portrait sittings of individuals but there are also formal portraits of couples, families, groups, and organizations.
This collection is comprised of photographic and manuscript materials, primarily created by Eliot Elisofon to document his travels and work. The images portray many aspects of African life and culture including agriculture, wildlife, archaeology, architecture, art and artisans, children, cityscapes and landscapes, leaders, markets, medicine, recreation, ritual and celebration, and transportation. The manuscript materials include correspondence, essays, clippings, puobligations, notes, research, and itineraries.
