The collection dates from 1900 to 1997 and mostly includes images taken in South Africa. The images document the peoples of South Africa, particularly the Loved, Ndebele, San, Sotho, Xhosa, and Zulu peoples. Locations photographed include Basutoland (now Lesotho), Bechuanaland (now Botswana), Johannesburg, Natal, Pretoria, Soweto, Swaziland, Transkei, Transvaal, the Umzimkulu Valley and Zululand. Manuscript and office files include clippings, correspondence, exhibition announcements, invitations and reviews, notes, essays, receipts, and other materials that document Larrabee's career, family history, and personal life.

A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Scurlock photographic studio was a fixture in the Shaw area of Washington, DC from 1911 to 1994, and encompassed two generations of photographers, Addison N. Scurlock (1883-1964) and his sons George H. (1920- 2005) and Robert S. (1916-1994). Series 1 primarily consists of black and white photographs, but also includes job envelopes, order forms, correspondence, notes, and other photographic materials such as negatives. The collection is comprised of digital surrogates previously available on the 21 rolls of microfilm described in NARA publication M1902. These digital surrogates reproduced the records of the District of Columbia field offices of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1865–1870. Some pre-Bureau records dated 1863 and 1864 are included. These records consist of bound volumes and unbound records, containing materials that include letters and endorsements sent and received, monthly reports, registers of marriages, and employment registers.

This show featured 36 portraits--27 oil paintings and 9 color photo reproductions--selected from the Harmon Foundation collection, from the National Portrait Gallery, as well as biographical information and memorabilia. Likenesses of blacks who made significant contributions in the fields of civil rights, law, education, medicine, the military, and the arts are on display. Included are Marian Anderson, Joe Lewis, W.E.B. duBois, Thurgood Marshall, George Washington Carver, Charles Drew, William Ayres Campbell, and Richard Barthe. It was exhibited at the Anacostia Neigborhood Museum from April 17, 1983 to August 21, 1983.
