The artists' files of William Henry Holmes, curator and director of the Smithsonian's National Collection of Fine Arts (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum) in Washington, D.C., measure 0.2 linear feet and date from 1879 to 1955. The artists' files consist mostly of correspondence, but also include a few photographs, artwork in the form of sketches, and printed material. There is also one file relating to Holmes' affiliation with the Washington Water Color Club.

Drawings of warfare and courting. Original manuscript captions on drawings include Big Horse, Red Wolf, Bird Chief, Tall Red Bird, and Red Eagle. Photographs have hand-written numbers, apparently referring to pages in the original. One has a note by James Mooney on the reverse; "Cheyenne Pictures from Evans Cheyenne Picture Book 1906."

Bound book of unruled paper, now disbound and laminated. Includes scenes of hunting, ceremonies and daily Indian camp life. The manuscript now contains 14 drawings and the original volume cover. Original sequence of pictures not recorded. Identified as by a Cheyenne prisoner held at Ft. Marion, Florida (1875-78) on the basis of style and content.
