Photographs taken and postcards gathered by Philip M. Abrams during his travels through Liberia, Mali, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Burkina Faso, 1970-1973. Activities documented in the images include a Bundu sande women's society performance with Sowei (female guardian spirit) masks in Liberia; a Dogon dama (festival) masquerade staged for tourists in Sangha, Mali; a Grebo war dance in Krutown, Monrovia, Liberia; young Vai boys during initiation into the poro male secret society; and masked Vai dancers performing on Providence Island, Monrovia.

This collection contains 369 African postage stamps from the post-independence period (circa 1960s-1970s). The stamps depict African leaders, traditional African art and artists, cultural performances, flora and fauna, and prominent visitors to the continent, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Pope Paul VI. A majority of the stamps come from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire. Other countries represented include Gabon, Mali, Cameroon, Tunisia, Zambia, Morocco, Dahomey (now Benin), Libya, Gambia, Somalia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zaire (formerly the Belgian Congo and now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Upper Volta (now Burkina-Faso), Mauritius, South Africa, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Uganda, Egypt, Sudan and the Comoros.
Photographs taken during a research trip to Mali in 1989 to study the art and architecture of the Dogon and Bamana peoples. Accompanying Dr. Ravenhill was Stanley Staniski from Media Resources. Their work resulted in the video production entitled, Togu na and Cheko: Change and Continuity in the Art of Mali, for the National Museum of African Art.

Photographs taken by Marli Shamir in Mali, in 1971. The majority of the images show architecture in Djenne, Mali. Other images depict architecture of the Dogon in Timbuktu, Gao and San. Photographs from this collection were featured by Labelle Prussin's thesis entitled, "The Architecture of Djenne; African Synthesis and Transformation," (Yale University, 1974) and in her book entitled, "Hatumere: Islamic Design in West Africa," (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1986). The images have also been displayed in an exhibition entitled, "Marli Shamir Photographs from the Sahel," held in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, in 1976.
