Photographs taken by Victoria Scott from 1969 to 1979 in Nigeria to document Nigerian art, in particular works at the Oshogbo school, while teaching and working as a visual artist at the Jebba Technical College. Photographs are of artists and their works. Scott used the images in her courses on Nigerian art at the college. The photographs document drawings, graphic prints, paintings and textiles of the Oshogbo school of artists. There are photographic reproductions of the following works: Elephant by Nike; Elmina Castle by Kwe Ade Odus; Free Yourself and See Yourself by Twins Seven-Seven; Mamiwata VoyiboII by Bruce Onobrakpeya; Obatala and his Wife by Joseph Olu-Billy; Ogun, God of Iron by Sam Babarinsa; Reindeer by Jimoh Buraimoh; The Secret Life of the Twins of Nigeria by Asiru Olatunde; and Yam Festival Masquerade by Adebisi Fabunmui. Also included within the collection are images of artists at work and the town in which they live. People portrayed include artist Adebisi Fabunmi; a blacksmith at work in Kaduna, Nigeria; and potters in Gahana. Images of the towns include a market in Abeokuta, Nigeria; a Portuguese fort in Cape Coast, Ghana and an Osun (deity) shrine in Oshogbo.

Photographs taken by Thomas Weir in Liberia to document Liberian culture, 1960-1966. The photographs document the architecture, arts, events and peoples of Liberia, particularly the Bassa, Kru and Vai. Activities documented include blacksmithing, ivory carving, the making of a dugout canoe, pottery, market vending and basket and cloth weaving. Architectural images include government ministries, hospitals, schools and numerous street scenes in Monrovia, as well as Bassa houses and villages. Art works depicted include paintings on houses and signs, as well as paintings, sculptures and textiles created as tourist art. Events documented include official government ceremonies with staged indigenous dances; rituals in villages such as young members of the female sande society returning from the initiation camp; and visits by foreign heads of state such as Queen Elizabeth II and Josip Broz Tito of Yoguslavia. Liberians portrayed include President William V.S. Tubman and the people of Monrovia and other towns.

Photographs taken by Wilhelm Schneider (1902-1990) to document his experiences as a missionary for the Swiss Basel Mission in Cameroon, 1937-1940. The photographs document the culture of the Weh people and their neighbors in the Cameroon Grassfields during the 1930s. Activities include a funeral ceremony, hair braiding, house building, bridge crossing, food preparation, drum playing, knife sharpening, cotton spinning, field work, market selling and preaching. Architecture depicted includes chiefs' palaces, compounds, a mission school house, shrines and villages. Portraits include chiefs, kings, members of the secret society, kweifo, with their adornments, and other people showing dress, masks, ornaments and scarification.

Photographs taken by James E. Payne while on vacation in East Africa of Coptic Christians in Ethiopia and the daily life of the Nuba and people in the Sudan. Images of Christians, mostly taken in the village of Lalibel, show various activities such as celebrations during the Timkat festival, cooking, Bible study and washing. Also depicted are art objects to include crucifixes and illuminated manuscripts. Images of the Nuba in Sudan, many from the Kordofan region, illustrate activities such as boat building in Omdurman, celebrating an Islamic festival in Omdurman, buying and selling in markets, and wrestling.
