The collection documents the customs and culture of black gospel song and its performance in 19th- and 20th-century America. Dr. Reagon collected photographs, sheet music, and other primary and secondary sources chronicling the development and legacy of this medium, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement, from blues to Gospel to classical to jazz. Among the subjects included in this collection are trailblazers such as Charles Tindley, Thomas A. Dorsey, Rosetta Tharpe, Duke Ellington, and Nathaniel Dett. Noted performers are the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Harmonizing Four, the Hampton University Choir, and the Chick Webb Orchestra.

Slides taken in Nigeria, 1965-67, a few years after independence and at the eve of the Biafra War by Edwin R. and Emily Dean. Emily Dean took most of the photographs. She taught at the St. Louis Secondary School. The images are typical for the time period (note that some of them are half frame images, taken with a type of camera heavily promoted in the 1960s). Geographic locations reflect the Deans' experiences and travel: the University of Ibadan Campus, the Jos Museum, Bida , Zaria, Kano, Lagos, and Abeokuta. Of particular interest is a series of Adire production in Abeokuta, the old palace at Idanre and the Timi of Ede's Shango shrine.

The Grace Jeffers Collection of Formica Materials consists of textual files, photographs, slides, negatives, drawings, blueprints, posters, advertisements, product brochures, newsletters, and informational pamphlets documenting the history of the Formica Corporation and the use of Formica brand plastic laminate.

The collection includes thirty-eight punchboards, all unpunched and in very good to excellent condition, and featuring a range of products and imagery. The collection documents the building, operation and daily life of coal mining communities in Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio between 1911 and 1946. The collection is a valuable for the study of mining technology and the social conditions of the time period and regions.
