The Great Migration is a unique, ongoing digitization service program that partners the National Museum of African American History and Culture with individuals across the United States to preserve their important analog audiovisual media. While major motion picture film and television historically lacked diverse representation, black history was instinctively being preserved in everyday home movies. Today, these personal narratives serve as an invaluable tool for understanding and re-framing black moving image history, and provide a much needed visualization of African American history and culture.

The collection comprises administrative records consisting of card files, early gallery records, and a few other administrative files; correspondence with artists and galleries; artist files for Romare Bearden, Childe Hassam, Isamu Noguchi, and others; exhibition files for the gallery's first exhibition, The W.R. Valentiner Memorial Exhibition (1963-1964), and several other exhibitions held at the gallery; client files documenting business transactions with numerous organizations, galleries, and art schools; and printed materials consisting of exhibition catalogs, announcements, and posters for J.L. The Bedman Brothers Company Records collection focuses primarily on the business and financial transactions of Bedman Brothers seed company of Rahway, New Jersey, and includes accounting ledgers, purchase orders, price lists, miscellaneous business and family correspondence, and various brochures, pamphlets and leaflets related to horticultural topics. Other holdings in the collection include World War II ration stamps and two scrapbooks, one of which contains many late nineteenth and early twentieth century chromo-lithographed trade cards (primarily from the sewing, clothing, and floral industries). The other scrapbook holds news clippings from the Civil War period. Seperated materials include seed gathering equipment used by field workers.
