Photographs and cabinet cards from Senegal collected by the staff of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, during the 1980s. Popular from the mid-1860s through the 1900s, cabinet cards were commercially produced 4" x 5 1/2" photoprints mounted on card stock measuring 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", often with an embossed studio name in the corner. Frequently sold as collectors' items, these cards often contained images of attractive women or royalty of various nationalities. Images include cabinet cards from the Bonnevide Photographic Studio and from J. Barbier.

Photographs displayed in the exhibition entitled, "Regards croises," held at the National Museum of Mali in Bamako, Mali, from July 27 through August 26, 1990. The exhibit was a joint effort between the National Museum of Mali and The National Museum of African Art (U.S.), which included images from both museums. The prints are complementary copies from the National Museum of Mali. The National Museum of African Art provided images from the photographer, Eliot Elisofon.

Photographs from various museums assembled by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) for use in the traveling exhibition entitled, "Art of Cameroon" (on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History from February 1, 1984-June 17, 1984). The exhibition was described on the Smithsonian website in these words: "On view are 153 objects, including figural sculptures, thrones, stools, elephant masks, bowls, baskets, calabashes (gourds), drinking horns, textiles, and more. Many objects are on loan from museums and collectors in the U.S., Europe, and Africa. "A crossroads for the migrations of many peoples, the diversity of Cameroon's population is reflected in the great variety and richness of art forms. Objects from the steppes and the forest are shown, but the primary focus of the exhibition is the art of the West African kingdoms of the Cameroon grassfields."

The collection consists of twenty slides taken at the Kibo Art Gallery, which was run by Tanzanian artist Elimo Njau. Ten of the slides were published/distributed by the Kibo Art Gallery and depict art objects. The other ten slides were photographed by Peace Corps volunteer Eloise Thompson and portray people at a workshop at the Kibo Art Gallery in Marangu in 1965, including artist Elimo Njau.
