The Scurlock photographic studio was a fixture in the Shaw area of Washington, DC. from 1911 to 1994, and encompassed two generations of photographers, Addison N. Scurlock (1883-1964) and his sons George H. (1920- 2005) and Robert S. (1916-1994). Series 7 consists of black-and-white color separation negatives and instructions for processing kodak matrix film. The majority of the photographs were taken in Cape Coast. Some the images were taken in Elmina. Several images depict chiefs, including a chief of Elmina, in their regalia and with their entourages. Other images depict Fante peoples in studio settings. Their attire and coiffures are of great relevance for art historical study. Also included in the album are images of the architecture of Cape Coast and Elmina.

This collection consists of negatives and photographic prints taken in 1936 and 1937 by Eva L.R. Meyerowitz in Nigeria, Benin and Ghana. Peoples depicted include the Akan, Fon, Konkomba, and Tallensi and subjects include artisans, blacksmiths, dancing, markets, artwork and objects that were originally displyed in King Bezu's palace in Abomey, potters, shrines, and vernacular architeture.
